This project was created in Banff, Alberta during an artist residency at the Banff New Media Institute. The project utilized locative media.

I know a Place created interactive maps of places that people find significant in the area where they live.

The project collected the geographical coordinates of the places, the stories that people told about them, and the photographs they took. The resulting map reveals collective connections, interesting patterns, and captures the invisible layers that make a place special to us.

The unique part about this project is that people recorded their responses while they were physically present in the space that they were talking about.

How to use the on-line community map:

1. Click on the link below to see the larger map.

2. In the bottom of the larger map you will see that there are 3 hot spots. You can choose to center the map on Banff, Lake Louise, or Canmore.  People told wonderful stories about all three places.

2. Click on a place mark on the map (the red icon) and you will see the photograph that each person took and hear them talking about the place they chose as significant.
